Already encountered that problem myself... Didn't really know how I could let them come out WITHOUT the use of lines...

You could probably achieve the effect by increasing value contrasting...

I didn't say they weren't acceptable, I was just giving a suggestion as to how to emphasize things in a natural way without the usage of true, definite lines... ._.

XD It's much more distinct and easier to visualize, which is a good thing.
